2.4.0
👋 Hello everyone!
A new stable update of Buffer is out — v2.4.0 🚀
This release introduces an enhanced "Clear History" functionality to keep your pinned, bookmarked, and tagged items safe, along with critical fixes to OCR and real-time list updates!
🧹 Smart Clear History
The clear history functionality has been supercharged to prevent accidental loss of important data.
- Retain Favorites: Pinned, bookmarked, and tagged clipboard items are now safely kept when clearing history.
- Clean the Rest: Automatically purges only unannotated items, keeping your history organized yet functional.
⚡ OCR & List UI Real-time Refresh Fixes
We resolved issues where clipboard items (specifically OCR-extracted text and list updates) would not refresh in real-time.
- ClipboardItem Equatable: Fixed the custom Equatable implementation to correctly identify when items are mutated.
- Main-Thread UI Updates: Ensured list mutations and OCR results dispatch properly on the main thread, resulting in instantaneous UI response.
🧪 Unit Testing & Build Improvements
- Unit Tests: Added robust unit tests verifying the correctness of ClipboardItem properties, equality comparisons, and store mutations.
- DMG Notarization Script: Improved the notarization submission step within build_dmg.sh with improved error handling.

2.3.0
👋 Hello everyone!
A new pre-release update of Buffer is out — v2.3.0 🚀
This release introduces a real-time relative timestamp view to keep track of when clipboard items were captured, aligning nicely with the tagging system in the history window.
⏱️ Relative Timestamp View
You can now see exactly when each item was copied, updated in real-time right within the detail panel:
- Real-time updates: An active timer updates the timestamp dynamically (e.g. "just now", "15 seconds ago", "3 minutes ago").
- Smart rounding: Shows precise half-hour increments for hourly ranges (e.g., "1.5 hours ago") before transitioning to days, weeks, months, or years.
- Seamless layout integration: Carefully aligned to the right of the tags section inside HistoryContentView to maximize screen real-estate.
Thanks to everyone using Buffer, starring the repo, reporting bugs, and sharing ideas. Every day we make it better! ❤️
2.2.0
👋 Hello everyone!
A new pre-release update of Buffer is out — v2.2.0 🚀
This release introduces inline text editing directly within the history window, a smoother search experience, and a few visual refinements.
📝 Inline Text Editing
You can now edit any text or code snippet directly within the clipboard history preview pane!
- Click the pencil icon in the preview/detail pane to open the inline text editor.
- While editing, global keyboard shortcuts are temporarily bypassed so you can type freely.
- Press Esc, click the pencil icon again, or select a different item to automatically save your changes and sync them to the system clipboard.
🔍 Debounced Search
We've optimized how filtering and searching works in the history list:
- Implemented a debounce timeout on search typing to prevent UI stuttering on large histories.
- Faster list rendering when switching between filters or entering search queries.
🎨 Visual Refinements
- Increased the opacity of divider lines from 0.06 to 0.15 for much cleaner pane boundaries.
- Optimized filtered items cache handling for a snappier interface.
Thanks to everyone using Buffer, starring the repo, reporting bugs, and sharing ideas. Every bit of feedback helps make it better ❤️

Nothing major this time, just a few quality-of-life improvements and polish based on feedback.
🗑️ Bulk Delete
You can now select multiple items using ⇧↑ / ⇧↓ or ⌘ + Click and delete them all at once with ⌘⌫. There's also an inline confirmation step to help prevent accidental deletions.

2.0.0Big update
Organize your clipboard history with a new color-coded tagging system.
- Add Tags on the Fly: Highlight any history item and press ⌘T to add a tag.
- Tab-Completion: Suggests existing tags as you type, allowing you to hit Tab to auto-complete.
- Smart Filter Autocomplete: Type # in the search bar to view existing tags and autocomplete them.
- Quick Filter Controls: Tap a tag chip to instantly filter by it, and clear it easily with backspace or by clicking the close button on the filter bar.
Keep important items safe from deletion without altering your history order.
- Protected Status: Pressing ⌘B flags an item as a Bookmark. Bookmarked items are marked with a gold badge and are protected from eviction when the clipboard limit is reached.
- Chronological Alignment: Unlike Pins (which stay anchored at the top of the list), Bookmarks remain in chronological order but cannot be auto-deleted.
Buffer now keeps itself up to date securely and seamlessly.
- Launch Checks: Buffer automatically checks for updates on startup.
- Architecture-Aware Updates: Resolves and downloads zips matching your Mac's architecture (Apple Silicon vs. Intel).
- Strict Security: Verifies the cryptographic code signature (codesign) of downloaded versions before installation.
- Smooth Relaunch: Uses a detached script (nohup) to safely replace the app bundle in /Applications and relaunch it.
- "What's New" HUD: On first launch after updating, a native HUD toast confirms the successful update and provides a What's New → button linking directly to release details.
Avoid losing your place in history.
- 2-Minute Window: If you close the Buffer window and reopen it within 2 minutes, your search query and active tag filters are preserved.
- If the window is closed for longer than 2 minutes, the search query is automatically cleared.
- Transient UI states (like active tag input popovers or autocomplete menus) always reset on open, and the selection correctly snaps to the first visible item matching your search.
- About Section: Refined the Settings panel to include design credits to @samirpatil2000, links to ⭐ Star on GitHub, and quick access to report issues.
- Layout Polish: Optimized the alignment and size of the paste button and tag chip displays.

1.6
This release focuses on handling large clipboard items with high performance and a seamless user experience.
- Lazy Chunked Previews 📜: Experience smooth, scroll-based loading for large text items. No more "Show More" buttons—just smooth, automatic loading.
- Unlimited Text Storage 📦: We've removed the 5MB clipboard capture limit. Text of any size is now fully captured and stored safely on disk.
- Enhanced Detail Metrics 📊: Subtle size indicators (MB/KB/Bytes) are now shown next to item titles. Small items (< 1KB) now show precise byte counts.
- Smart Loading Hints ✨: Added a refined "scroll to load more" indicator at the bottom of truncated views that disappears once content is fully loaded.
- Reliable Paste 📋: Guaranteed that the original, full-length content is always preserved for all paste operations, regardless of the preview state.
- Memory Optimization: Improved data handling when viewing multi-megabyte text files.
- Lazy Rendering: Switched to LazyVStack for the detail view to ensure the scroll-to-load sensor only triggers when reached.
- Clean Previews: Removed legacy sentinel strings from truncated items in favor of a modern, metadata-driven UI.
1.5
- Dynamic Hotkey Re-registration: Users can now change the global shortcut from the Settings UI, and it takes effect immediately without needing to restart the app.
- Accessibility Permissions: Added an explicit request for Accessibility permissions on launch to ensure the global hotkey API (Carbon) functions correctly on modern macOS.
- Refined Hotkey Management:
- Removed hardcoded key codes and modifiers.
- Implemented a more robust registration flow that cleans up previous hotkey references.
- Added detailed console logging for easier debugging of hotkey registration.
- UI Improvements: Updated the Settings view to provide better feedback during shortcut recording.
- Download the latest Buffer_Release.dmg attached below.
1.4
Buffer v1.4 adds fast, private, on‑device image text extraction and a calmer reading experience.
Features
- Image OCR: Extract text from any image in your clipboard with Apple’s on‑device Vision framework (offline and secure).
- Smart Persistence: Once OCR is run on an image, its text is saved and instantly available next time.
- Clean Reader: Minimal, borderless text view with refined system typography for distraction‑free reading.
- Smart Copy: Select any part of the extracted text, press Cmd+C, and Buffer saves that selection to history.
Fixes & Improvements
- Stable Navigation: Detail pane no longer flickers or loses selection when new clipboard items appear.
- Toolbar Polish: OCR moved into the detail toolbar as a text.viewfinder icon alongside Bookmark and Delete.
1.3
Performance Fix: Prevents the application from freezing or crashing when copying large blocks of text or massive log files by moving away from storing full text inline in history.json.
3-Tier Size Logic
- < 50 KB: Stored normally as inline text.
- 50 KB – 5 MB: Full text is written to a designated .txt background file.
The UI stores only a 500-character preview and displays a Large indicator tag. Clicking the item lazy-loads the remaining text directly from disk natively.
- > 5 MB (Extreme Limit): Text is hard-capped and truncated at 500 characters and labeled as too large to prevent system lockups entirely. No background file is created.
Optimized Hashing
The clipboard watcher’s duplicate-detection hashing algorithm now only hashes a small prefix of huge files instead of the entire text string, eliminating CPU spikes.
1.2
- Bookmarks: Star your favorite items (⌘ + B or click the star icon) to keep them protected from automatic deletion.
- Quick Delete: Added a dedicated Trash button in the detail pane.
- Image Previews: Fixed the infinite loading spinner that appeared on initial image views.
To Install: Download Buffer.dmg below and drag it to Applications!
