  1. 0.1.14Latest

Fixes an app crash some users hit when starting a recording, especially after switching microphones or Bluetooth devices. The audio engine now recovers cleanly instead of taking the app down.

  2. 0.1.13

    • Fixed dictation intermittently not pasting into Electron-based terminals (e.g. cmux). The clipboard was being restored before the app finished reading the pasted text; it now waits long enough for the paste to land.
  3. 0.1.12

    • Fixed Bluetooth headsets being held in low-quality call/recording mode while Yap was running. The microphone device is now released as soon as a dictation ends. Thanks @FrenchMajesty.
    • Fixed the recording waveform not appearing on multi-monitor setups. It now shows on the screen of the app you are dictating into. Thanks @mikehearn.
  4. 0.1.11

    • Added a "Show in menu bar" toggle. You can now run Yap from the Dock only, the menu bar only, both, or neither, and drive it on the shortcut alone. Thanks @zodwick.
    • Fixed a crash when switching microphones during an active recording (extends the earlier device-switch fix to live switches).
  5. 0.1.10

    • Fixed a crash when switching to an input device with a different sample rate (e.g. from the built-in mic to Bluetooth earbuds) and then dictating. Thanks @TheHamkerCat.
    • Shortened the clipboard restore window after a paste, so pressing Cmd+V yourself right after dictating no longer double-pastes the transcript.
  6. 0.1.9

A small fix for the Dock.

    • Turning off Show in Dock while Settings was open left the Dock icon on screen until you toggled the setting again. Closing the Settings window now hides it. Thanks to @eltoncrego for the report.

brew upgrade --cask yap, or download Yap.dmg below. Requires macOS 26 on Apple Silicon.

  7. 0.1.8

Cleaner transcripts out of the box.

    • Filler words are stripped automatically. Um, uh, and similar are removed from every dictation with a deterministic on-device pass, no setting to turn on and no Apple Intelligence needed. Real words that contain those letters ("human", "summary") are left alone.

brew upgrade --cask yap, or download Yap.dmg below. Requires macOS 26 on Apple Silicon.

  8. 0.1.7

Teach Yap the names and words it keeps getting wrong.

    • Custom dictionary. A new Dictionary screen in Settings where you add names, brands, and jargon Yap should know. It works in layers: the on-device transcriber leans toward your words when it hears them, a deterministic pass fixes first-letter slips like "brigade" to "Frigade" with no model at all, and when Clean up transcripts is on, the same on-device pass also corrects messier mishearings from context. Everything stays on device.

brew upgrade --cask yap, or download Yap.dmg below. Requires macOS 26 on Apple Silicon.

  9. 0.1.6

Optional on-device cleanup of your transcripts, and a tidier Settings screen.

    • Clean up transcripts (optional). A new setting runs your finished transcript through the on-device Apple Intelligence model to drop filler words like um and uh, fix punctuation, apply spoken corrections like "scratch that", and lay out spoken lists as lists. It's off by default, needs Apple Intelligence enabled, and stays on device with no network calls. Thanks to @kballenegger for building it.
    • Simpler Settings. The separate permissions section is gone. If a permission is ever missing you get a banner that takes you to grant it, and otherwise Settings stays out of your way.

brew upgrade --cask yap, or download Yap.dmg below. Requires macOS 26 on Apple Silicon.

  10. 0.1.5

On-device only, and steadier when you switch audio devices.

Yap now transcribes only through the on-device SpeechAnalyzer. The old fallback used SFSpeechRecognizer, which could send audio to Apple's servers when a locale had no on-device model, and on Intel Macs it did that for everything. That path is gone. If a language can't be handled on device, Yap stops rather than sending your audio anywhere. Thanks to @lissy93 for reporting it.

Because the on-device engine needs Apple Silicon, this release drops Intel support. If you are on an Intel Mac, stay on 0.1.4 or an earlier version. Yap 0.1.5 will not run on Intel.

Hardened audio capture so changing your input mid-session (plugging in a display, dock, or interface) no longer stacks engine observers, which could stop recording or crash the app. It now recovers on the new device or stops cleanly.

brew upgrade --cask yap, or download Yap.dmg below. Requires macOS 26 on Apple Silicon.

  11. 0.1.4

Run Yap from the menu bar only, and trigger it with a function key or your MacBook's mic key.

    • Show in Dock toggle. General settings now has a Show in Dock switch. Leave it on for the Dock icon, or turn it off to run Yap from the menu bar only. Applies live, no restart.
    • Function-row key trigger. You can now bind a bare F-key, or the dedicated dictation (mic) key on 2021+ MacBooks, as your dictation shortcut. Binding the mic key opens Yap instead of the built-in macOS dictation. Thanks to @kballenegger for the contribution.

Download Yap.dmg below, or brew install --cask frigadehq/tap/yap.

  12. 0.1.3

Dictate in a language other than your Mac's, and a fix for silent transcriptions on some setups.

    • Language picker. Settings now has a Language section where you can pick any of the languages Yap transcribes fully on-device, so you can dictate in a language your system isn't set to.
    • Fixed dictation returning nothing when your system language and region disagree (for example, English set to a Spanish region). Yap now resolves your locale to one the speech engine supports instead of silently giving up. This also covers the reports of Yap doing nothing on some Apple Silicon Macs.

Thanks to @oliver-fried for the locale fix.

Download Yap.dmg below, or brew install --cask frigadehq/tap/yap.

  13. 0.1.2

Fixes long dictations getting truncated to just the last few sentences on Intel Macs (the SFSpeechRecognizer fallback now accumulates and stitches segments instead of keeping only the recent window).

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later.

  14. 0.1.1

Fixes a crash when the default audio input device changes (e.g. switching peripherals or docks).

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without warnings. Requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later.

  15. 0.1.0

First release of Yap: fast, on-device voice dictation for macOS.

    • On-device transcription with Apple's Speech framework
    • Global shortcut with optional single-modifier triggers
    • Pastes into whatever app you were typing in
    • Local transcript history

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without warnings.

Requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later.

Download Yap.dmg below and drag Yap into your Applications folder.
